上海环球金融中心

Shanghai World Financial Center

Yesterday Valeriya and I Went up the brand new Shanghai World Financial Center building. It is currently the second-tallest building in the world, after the Burj Dubai in Dubai. We this would be the perfect opportunity to go and make our first visit up this gargantuan structure because Valeriya’s four friends from Moscow had just arrived into Shanghai to visit.

Although a bit pricey, the architecture is mesmerizing. The building towers over both the TV Tower and the Jin Mao building. The most interesting part is a glass platform on the ground on the viewing area, where you can step on while looking down.

新年快乐!!

Happy New Year!!!

Today I celebrated my first Chinese new year in china (last year I was in Southeast Asia). My friend Xiang Zhang Yu hosted a dinner party, and we feasted on special new years dishes. We also lit off lots of fireworks! The sky was lit up with fireworks - the whole city (afterwards, the air smelled terrible because of the smoke, but it was still amazing). It sounded like we were in a war zone.

Later on in the night, we went to a very lively Buddhist temple. There were so many people there!

It was definitely a new years I will never forget.

Beijing Episode 4

A New Hope

This week my friend Valery and I headed for Beijing. I was excited to see post-Olympics beijing, and the city didn't disappoint! The last time I came here was in March, and there were so many new buildings and stadiums. The tourist sites were selling souviners for suprisingly low prices, so I loaded up on gifts.

Since it was Val's first trip to Beijing, we did all the usual sites - the summer palace, forbidden city, hall o'congress, temple o'heaven, and the military history museum. Most exciting of all were the Olympic Stadiums, which we got to tour. We went into the Water Cube stadium and the Bird's nest stadium. It was lots of fun.

We stayed at the same hotel that I stayed at during the last time I visited. I also called our friends, Ma and LingLing, and went out with them for dinner.

Thanksgiving In Shanghai

Turkey, Wii, friends, and more!!!!

We truly have a lot to be thankful for this year - the most obvious reason is because we have a Democratic President-elect with an (almost) veto-proof majority in the Senate.

That being said, my room mate and I decided to host a Thanksgiving Party. I purchased a pre-roasted turkey and had it delivered to my house along with some mashed potatos and gravy. Our friends prepared and contributed their own dishes as well. We all went in a circle before dinner and said what we were thankful for.

After dinner we played some Wii and watched "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving."

It was a good Thanksgiving, and although I was unable to spend it with my family and my closest friend, Amara, it was great.

I heard the Lions lost their thanksgiving game by over 30 points this year. I guess some things never change!

Obama Victory Party and Halloween Party

2 in one week!

Last night we celebrated Obama's victory by hosting a party at our flat. My roommate and I made spaghetti and garlic bread for the 30+ group of close friends that came to share in the celebration. I even put my blender to use, making strawberry daquiris (the ingredients were really hard to find!). On the side of our wall we put up a massive American flag. I was a little hesitant to put it up at first, as I didn't want to be mistaken for one of those flag-waving crazies that drives a pick-up truck and likes NASCAR. But things will be different now, we are definitely headed in the right direction.

My room mate Matt recently purchased the ultimate party machine, the Nintendo Wii - and so we played that for a bit as well.

For Halloween, we went to a party at our good friend Allison's house. I was a cook. It was great fun, and it reminded me a lot of Halloween back home. Shanghai even has a few Halloween stores that sell costumes and party accessories!
